About the client
IFS provides catering services for offshore and commercial vessels. They train people to become qualified maritime chefs and stewards through their headquarters in Belgium and their training centers.
Customized solution
Designing the IFS training app, digitizing course materials, targeted microlearning courses, and ongoing guidance from UQ Learn experts.
Challenge
The challenge
Before COVID-19, trainees had to travel to IFS centers to attend courses. This traditional model limited the number of people who could be trained simultaneously.
The context
Training at IFS consists of two parts: theoretical lessons followed by practical exercises in the kitchen. Before starting their practical training, trainees must complete all modules and pass a digital exam.
The focus
Together, we focused on digitizing the theoretical part of the training with the aim of scaling the current model.
The goal
Digitizing the training to transition to a hybrid model: theory online, practice on-site.
Solution
From physical to hybrid
We set up the IFS Coach — a dedicated app for IFS on mobile and desktop. This digitized the theoretical part of their training.
The content
The content is now available in a microlearning format and includes multimedia and game-based challenges, making the learning experience more interactive, effective, and enjoyable.
The impact
Trainees learn at their own pace. Everyone receives the same high-quality training that is always accessible.
Results
Scalability
The company now trains more than 250 maritime professionals annually with the IFS Coach. This has enabled further expansion.
Recognition
The IFS Chief Cook’s Course is part of the official government accreditation by the FPS.
Personal growth
The digitized final exam gives trainees insight into their current level of knowledge. This helps them identify which aspects of the training require additional review.
